Flickr Mashups are a pretty interesting idea that really seem to fail in comparison to what they offer. I had a lot of trouble getting most of them (around 95%) of them to work at all, much less actually get them to create something. I understand that they are a 3rd party application and that as with most 3rd party applications are a bit unreliable but most of the Flickr mashup tools simply did not hold up to what they said they could do. I would say I am pretty unimpressed with these tools. One of the few I could get to work and actually create something was "Spell" which was featured in the APSU 23 Things blog.
As for their applications, I feel they can be pretty useful for classroom in creating original images that are relevant to the times and to what is being taught and helping to engage students. As for me, I do not see myself ever using these tools or Flickr itself. Taking photos is not something I have ever enjoyed especially if I am in them and so Flickr in general does not appeal to me. As for sharing photos online, I would have to say that with current copy right laws its simply too risky with too much hassle (but that is a different subject).
